PLASTA’s Anti-Bullying Campaign
16th June 2017
Currently there is a national drive to change the attitude towards bullying and undermining in the surgical workplace with ASiT and the Royal College of surgeons of Edinburgh driving this.
There is a clear connection between bullying and undermining and patient safety which is a grave concern. Each year there is stronger evidence that this behaviour significantly negatively impacts not only on the working of teams but also on success as a doctor, in research and personal life.
In small specialties like Plastic surgery it is even more difficult to address this and do something about it.
A survey is being developed by ASiT with the support of all other specialties where concerns will be able to be highlighted anonymously and then looked into anonymously.
PLASTA together with BAPRAS and the SAC are working on our own anti-bullying policy. We will not tolerate this any longer and have zero tolerance towards it.
If you have any concerns about bullying in your Hospital or your Deanery or would like to contribute to the working of this policy we would be grateful if you got in touch with us.
In the meantime a valuable link is attached where guidance, advice posters and presentations can be found to try and stamp out this sad and destructive behaviour.
